Tokyo is Japan’s ultra modern and bustling capital which stands proudly as the number one destination for many travelers year after year. The uber modern city of Tokyo offers plenty of things to see and do that the whole family will enjoy.
Tokyo is known for its high tech reputation so a trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without sampling the strange sights at the Robot Restaurant. Dine in style at this themed eatery where you’ll be entertained by lasers, dancers and robotic monsters!
To continue the high tech theme, take a trip to Odaiba, the high tech hub of Tokyo. This man-made island on Tokyo Bay is easily accessible by the futuristic Yurikamome train or the Rainbow Bridge. It’s got a totally different vibe to the city itself, and is a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle. There’s a ferris wheel, shopping and plenty more on offer to cater to young and old tourists alike. There’s an observatory sphere where you can see views of Odaiba. You can also get some retail therapy at the indoor shopping mall Venus Fort. You can also dine in style at the beach side restaurant TARLUM BIANCO located at Odaiba Kaihin Park Beach. There’s also the Mori Park Digital Art Museum if you fancy seeing some futuristic artwork.
Despite its high tech reputation, Tokyo is home to more traditional neighbourhoods such as Asakusa. There you’ll find the Buddhist temple Sensoji which stands proudly in its vivid red tones. Whilst there you can get your fortune told and even cover yourself in incense for good luck! The temple is a popular spot with tourists but you can beat the crowds by escaping to one of the quieter areas. You can even get a sneaky view of the Tokyo SkyTree if you head up to the 8th floor of the nearby Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Centre.
The Tokyo SkyTree is the tallest tower in the whole world and the observatory provides you with incredible panoramic views across the whole of Tokyo. There’s also a restaurant inside so you won’t need to worry about building up an appetite during your visit.
Sumo is the national sport of Japan and in Tokyo you can have the unique experience of watching sumo wrestlers take part in their training in what’s known as a Sumo Stable. Why not take the experience one step further and go and watch a sumo match? There are usually tickets available for tourists wanting to catch a glimpse of the action.
Gamers will know that Japan is the birthplace of Nintendo, so what better way to show your appreciation than by donning the outfit of your favourite character as you race round the city in a go-kart? ‘Maricar’ is certainly an experience not to be missed, so long as you have a valid driving license you’ll be let loose onto the streets of Tokyo, racing challengers as you speed past all the cities sites and attractions.
In keeping with the gaming theme, why not take a trip to the quirky Anato No Warehouse in Kawasaki? This massive arcade spans across three floors and its decked out to resemble one of the seedy back alleys in Hong Kong’s Kowloon walled city. You’ll see this theme more prominently at the first floor entrance, the rest of the floors are themed like the usual neon arcades. The arcade offers a huge catalogue of games for you to play including driving games, beat-em-ups, rhythm games and the popular taiko drumming. Gamers could easily spend a whole morning or afternoon here.
If arcade games aren’t your thing, why not take a trip to the beautiful Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden? This stunning park looks most magnificent when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and all of the leaves have turned a vibrant red. The gardens are a tranquil oasis escape from the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku where you can sit back and relax in one of the Japanese, English or French gardens. Why not make an afternoon of it and bring along a picnic?
Tokyo offers plenty more lush green spaces. Take a tour of the Imperial Palace and Gardens and you’ll find yet another spot that’s perfect for viewing cherry blossom trees in full bloom. The gardens are divided into three main gardens each with a different story and something unique to offer its visitors.
A trip to Tokyo wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the local delicacies. Ramen noodles are arguably the most famous dish. There are plenty of ramen restaurants dotted around Tokyo, but the most famous area to get your hands on some is the Shinjuku area. Japan is also famous for its matcha flavour, and you can sample this in various forms including ice cream, tea, mousse and chocolate. There are plenty of cafes across Tokyo serving up this tasty flavour in many forms so be sure you give it a try during your trip.
Japan is also famous for its Kawaii culture, so if you’re a fan of this cutesy style a visit to the famous Harajuku is a must. You’ll be spoilt for choice with plenty of shops, boutiques and stalls stocking everything from t shirts to phone cases. If you’re after a more traditional shopping experience or are on the hunt for the latest trends, then Takeshita Street is the place for you. One thing’s for sure, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to shop in Tokyo.
To experience the best of Tokyo nightlife, you need to head to the Shibuya area. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy a drink with friends here, from sipping a beer or cocktail in a skybar to dancing the night away in an underground club. If you can’t make your mind up then head towards the tiny alleys of Golden Gai where 200 minibars are squeezed into 6 alleyways. Most of the bars seat between 8 to 12 people so it’s definitely a cosy little spot to catch up with friends or meet with the other thirsty pedestrians! A trip to Tokyo wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a karaoke bar. After all, it’s just one of the many things the city is famous for.
To sip a drink with a difference why not head over to an Owl Cafe? That’s right, you can sip your tea in the company of these wonderful birds but be careful not to get too close! If owls aren’t your thing maybe you’d prefer to have a drink with a friendly feline in one of the city’s cat cafes.
There’s also plenty of museums for you to explore such as Tokyo National Museum with over 110,000 artifacts on display. This is the largest and oldest national museum in the whole of Japan. It showcases one of the largest collections of archaeological artefacts and artwork as well as temporary exhibitions. Some of the others include Kyushu National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, and the Nara National Museum.
Tokyo is also home to quirky capsule hotels. Instead of staying in the usual backpacker hostel or paying over the odds for a hotel why not try a completely unusual sleep experience? Immerse yourself in a pod-like room with all the amenities you’d come to expect from a standard hotel.
For a fun filled day out for the whole family, a trip to Tokyo Disneyland is a must. Kids and big kids alike are sure to fall in love with the magic of Tokyo Disneyland. Make sure you keep your camera handy as you’re sure to want to snap a selfie with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto and the rest of the gang. There are plenty of rides and attractions within the park itself, and if you’re planning an extended visit you can stay in the park’s themed hotel.
If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli films such as Poyo and Spirited Away, then you won’t want to miss a trip to the Ghibli Museum. It showcases everything from props and drawings that have featured in the films that fans are sure to go crazy for. Much of the exhibits and animations are in Japanese but it’s still worth while for fans of the Ghibli franchise.
There’s plenty of Tokyo worth exploring and we’ve highlighted just a fraction of it.
